Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for soothing mucous membranes throughout the body, including those of the digestive tract. In the context of supporting the small intestines, marshmallow root has been used to help alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal irritation, such as those caused by gastritis, ulcers, or inflammatory bowel conditions. The plant contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that can coat and protect the lining of the intestines, potentially reducing irritation and inflammation.

However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Some in vitro (test tube) and animal studies suggest that marshmallow extract can protect gut tissue and reduce inflammation, primarily due to its mucilage content and possible antioxidant effects. Human clinical trials are lacking, and the available research is not robust enough to firmly validate its use for small intestine health. Regulatory bodies such as the European Medicines Agency acknowledge its traditional use for soothing irritation in the mouth and throat, but not specifically for the small intestine.

Overall, the use of marshmallow root for supporting the small intestine is justified primarily by traditional knowledge, with a modest amount of preclinical data but very limited human clinical evidence. Its use remains popular in herbalism, but it should not be considered a substitute for proven medical treatments for intestinal disorders.
