Nigella seed (Nigella sativa), also known as black cumin, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Unani, Ayurveda, and traditional Middle Eastern medicine. Traditionally, nigella seed has been used for a variety of digestive complaints, including indigestion, bloating, and intestinal parasites, which encompass support for small intestine function. The seeds are thought to have carminative, anti-flatulent, and anti-inflammatory properties, and are sometimes used to stimulate digestion and alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort. However, while there is a substantial body of tradition supporting the use of nigella seed for digestive health in general, scientific research specifically focused on its effects on the small intestine is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that thymoquinone, a key constituent of nigella seed, may help modulate inflammation in the gut and protect the intestinal lining, but clinical trials in humans directly addressing small intestine health are sparse. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-established, the scientific validation for nigella seed's role in supporting the small intestine is still emerging and not robustly confirmed in human studies.
