Phytosterols are plant-derived sterols structurally similar to cholesterol. Their primary validated use is in lowering LDL cholesterol by inhibiting intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol. This mechanism directly involves the small intestine, as phytosterols compete with cholesterol for incorporation into mixed micelles within the intestinal lumen, thus reducing cholesterol uptake and enhancing its excretion. While this activity is well-supported by clinical studies and has led to regulatory approvals for health claims in several countries, the benefit is specific to cholesterol metabolism rather than broader small intestine "support." There is limited evidence to suggest that phytosterols directly improve small intestine function, integrity, or treat any specific small intestinal disorder. Most scientific literature focuses on their lipid-lowering effects, with some limited research into anti-inflammatory or mucosal protective effects in animal models, but these are not well-established in humans. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale for their effect on cholesterol absorption in the small intestine, the evidence for generalized "support" of small intestine health is weak, and the use is best characterized as scientifically justified but limited in scope.
