Salmon oil is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Scientific research supports several health benefits of omega-3s, particularly in relation to inflammation and overall cellular health. Regarding the small intestine specifically, the evidence is modest but growing. Some studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids can modulate inflammatory responses in the gut, potentially benefiting conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). For example, animal and in vitro studies have shown that omega-3 supplementation can alter gut microbiota composition, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce inflammatory cytokine production in the intestinal mucosa. Human clinical trials are less numerous and often focus broadly on gastrointestinal health or IBD rather than the small intestine alone. Nevertheless, there is some evidence that omega-3s from fish oils like salmon oil may play a supportive role in maintaining intestinal integrity and reducing inflammation in small intestine disorders.
