Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is an essential water-soluble vitamin crucial for carbohydrate metabolism and energy production. It is required as a coenzyme for several enzymes involved in the breakdown of sugars and amino acids, processes that are especially active in the small intestine due to its role in nutrient absorption. Thiamine deficiency can impair the normal function of the digestive system, leading to symptoms such as anorexia, constipation, and abdominal discomfort, which can be alleviated with supplementation.
Scientific literature confirms that thiamine is absorbed primarily in the jejunum of the small intestine via active transport mechanisms at low concentrations, and passive diffusion at higher concentrations. While thiamine is not prescribed specifically to treat small intestine diseases, its central metabolic role means that adequate thiamine status is essential for the health and function of the small intestine and the efficient absorption of nutrients. Clinical deficiency (beriberi, Wernicke’s encephalopathy) can present with gastrointestinal symptoms, and supplementation restores normal function, providing indirect evidence of its importance for this body system.
However, there is limited evidence that thiamine supplementation directly “supports” the small intestine in healthy individuals beyond preventing deficiency. The evidence base is therefore moderate: thiamine is essential for small intestine function, but not used therapeutically for small intestine disorders except in deficiency states.
