Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a tuberous root native to the Andes, traditionally consumed as a food. Its syrup and root are notable for their high content of fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a type of prebiotic fiber. Scientific studies have explored the impact of Yacon and its FOS content on gut health, especially in relation to the small intestine. FOS resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the small intestine relatively intact, where it serves as a substrate for beneficial microbiota. This prebiotic effect can promote the growth of probiotic bacteria, leading to increased production of short-chain fatty acids, improved bowel function, and enhanced nutrient absorption.

Some clinical trials and animal studies indicate that Yacon supplementation can modulate gut microbiota, improve intestinal transit, and support small intestine health by fostering a favorable environment for beneficial bacteria. However, most research focuses on the broader gastrointestinal tract rather than isolating effects within the small intestine alone. The evidence suggests a positive impact on digestive health and gut microbiome composition, but direct, robust clinical trials specifically targeting small intestine function are limited. Therefore, while Yacon’s support for the small intestine is scientifically plausible and supported by some preclinical and clinical data, the overall strength of evidence is moderate rather than conclusive.
