Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cyperus species, such as Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass), have been traditionally used in various ethnomedicinal systems for a range of conditions, including as a remedy for snake bites. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys from regions such as India, Africa, and Southeast Asia indicate that local practitioners have employed Cyperus tubers or rhizomes—often in combination with other ingredients—as poultices or decoctions in an attempt to mitigate the effects of snake venom. However, these uses are primarily anecdotal and based on traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.

To date, there is scant peer-reviewed scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Cyperus extracts in neutralizing snake venom or treating envenomation. While some laboratory studies have suggested that certain plant extracts may have anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties, direct antivenom activity has not been conclusively demonstrated for Cyperus spp. Furthermore, no clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies exist to validate its use for snake bite management. The continued use of Cyperus in traditional practices is therefore based on cultural heritage rather than scientific proof, and it is not recommended as a substitute for modern medical treatment in cases of snakebite.
