Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Leptadenia, particularly Leptadenia reticulata, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, where it is known as "Jivanti." In Indian ethnobotanical literature, Leptadenia reticulata is occasionally referenced for use in treating snakebite, typically as a component of polyherbal formulations or as an adjunct to other remedies. The plant is believed to have general detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties, which may have contributed to its traditional association with snakebite management. However, these recommendations are largely anecdotal, based on historical texts or folk practices rather than controlled clinical evaluation.

There is minimal scientific investigation into the anti-venom potential of Leptadenia reticulata. A few preclinical or in vitro studies may point to mild cytoprotective or immunomodulatory actions, but direct evidence for neutralization of snake venom or significant clinical efficacy in snakebite cases is lacking. As a result, the use of Leptadenia for snakebite should be considered traditional, with evidence primarily rooted in ethnomedicine rather than modern pharmacology or clinical trials. Modern medical practice does not recommend Leptadenia as a stand-alone or primary treatment for snakebite, and antivenom therapy remains the standard of care.
