Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as "king of bitters," has a long history of traditional use in Asia for treating infections and inflammatory conditions, including sore throat. In recent decades, its use has been investigated in clinical studies. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses provide moderate scientific evidence that Andrographis extracts, especially standardized extracts like Kan Jang, can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, including sore throat. For example, a 2017 Cochrane review included 33 trials and concluded that Andrographis may be more effective than placebo for relieving symptoms of acute respiratory tract infections, such as sore throat and cough, with a good safety profile. However, the quality of evidence is limited by methodological weaknesses in many studies, such as small sample sizes, short durations, and potential bias. The possible mechanisms of action are attributed to its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antiviral properties.
Overall, while Andrographis is traditionally used for sore throat and there is scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness, the strength of the evidence is moderate (rated 3/5). Larger, higher-quality studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and establish standardized dosing guidelines.
