Arisaema, known as "Tian Nan Xing" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a longstanding historical use in Asia for treating respiratory conditions, including sore throat. Classical TCM texts describe its use for "phlegm and wind" disorders, which can manifest as sore throat, cough, or swelling in the throat. The tuber is processed in specific ways (often with ginger or alum) to reduce toxicity and enhance therapeutic effects. Its primary TCM indications are to "resolve phlegm," "disperse swelling," and "relieve pain," which are sometimes interpreted as supportive for sore throat, especially when accompanied by thick phlegm or swelling. However, the direct evidence for Arisaema’s efficacy in sore throat is limited to traditional use and case descriptions. Scientific studies on Arisaema species mostly investigate anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor actions in vitro or in animal models, with little direct clinical research on sore throat. Safety concerns also exist, as the raw plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and other irritants, requiring careful processing. Overall, while traditional use for sore throat is well documented, strong scientific evidence or clinical trials supporting this application are lacking.
