Evidence supporting the use of: Aster tataricus
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aster tataricus, commonly known as Tatarian aster (and "Zi Wan" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has historically been used in East Asian herbal medicine primarily for respiratory ailments, including sore throat, cough, and phlegm. Ancient Chinese medical texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," describe its use as an expectorant and demulcent. The root is often included in herbal formulas for treating sore throat and related upper respiratory symptoms, generally attributed to its reputed ability to "clear heat" and "resolve phlegm." Modern pharmacological studies have identified some bioactive compounds in Aster tataricus, such as triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids, which may exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in vitro. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for sore throat in humans is very limited. Most supporting data are either preclinical or anecdotal, and systematic reviews or high-quality trials are lacking. Therefore, while its use is well-rooted in tradition and there is some pharmacological plausibility, the overall strength of evidence for treating sore throat with Aster tataricus remains low. Its continued use for this purpose is primarily based on longstanding traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation.
