Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Benzoin siam, a balsamic resin obtained from Styrax tonkinensis, has a long history of traditional use for respiratory ailments, particularly sore throat and coughs. In traditional medicine systems, especially in Southeast Asia and in European herbal practices, benzoin has been included in inhalations, lozenges, and topical preparations (such as compound tincture of benzoin or "Friar's Balsam") for its soothing properties. The resin contains aromatic compounds like benzoic acid and vanillin, which impart a pleasant scent and may help to form a protective layer over mucous membranes, providing symptomatic relief for minor throat irritation.

However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for sore throat is limited. Most modern uses are based on tradition and anecdotal reports rather than controlled clinical trials. While benzoin resin does have mild antiseptic properties, and inhalation of its vapors can provide a sense of soothing moisture to irritated airways, there is insufficient rigorous research demonstrating a significant therapeutic effect on sore throat specifically. The rating of 2 reflects the wide traditional use with some plausible pharmacological basis but a lack of strong scientific validation.
