Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus junos
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citrus junos, commonly known as yuzu, has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, particularly in Korea and Japan, for relieving symptoms of sore throat, cough, and the common cold. In Korea, yuzu is often prepared as "yuja-cheong" (a honey-citrus syrup) and mixed with hot water as a soothing drink for throat discomfort. The rationale for its use is based largely on its vitamin C content, antioxidant compounds (such as flavonoids and limonoids), and its aromatic, soothing properties. Historical and folk medicine texts highlight its warming properties and usefulness in treating minor respiratory ailments.
Scientific validation for the specific use of Citrus junos in treating sore throat is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that yuzu extracts possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically alleviate throat irritation or inhibit pathogens contributing to sore throats. However, clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of yuzu preparations for sore throat relief in humans are lacking. Thus, while Citrus junos is commonly used for sore throat support in traditional settings, scientific evidence supporting this practice is weak, and its use remains primarily justified by tradition rather than robust clinical data.
