Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

English Horsemint (Mentha longifolia or sometimes Mentha spicata) has a longstanding history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various ailments, including sore throat. In European folk medicine, teas and infusions made from the leaves were commonly used as a soothing remedy for throat irritation and minor respiratory complaints. The traditional rationale is largely based on the plant’s aromatic properties and its content of essential oils such as menthol and carvone, which can have a mild cooling and numbing effect that may provide temporary relief from throat discomfort.

However, there is little direct scientific evidence specifically validating the use of English Horsemint for sore throat relief. Most available data on its medicinal effects focus on its antimicrobial activity in vitro, general use as a digestive aid, or its role in flavoring. Clinical studies on sore throat or other upper respiratory symptoms are lacking. Therefore, while the herb is used traditionally for sore throat, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and primarily anecdotal or based on historical records rather than rigorous research.
