Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flesh-Finger Citron (also known as Buddha's Hand, Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating respiratory ailments, including sore throat. In TCM, the fruit is valued for its aromatic properties and believed to regulate "qi," resolve phlegm, and relieve discomfort in the throat and chest. Ancient herbal texts, such as the Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), describe the use of citron peel or flesh in decoctions or teas for soothing sore throat symptoms and coughs.

Despite its historical use, scientific research specifically evaluating the efficacy of Flesh-Finger Citron for sore throat is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory properties in citrus fruits, including citron varieties. However, robust clinical trials or direct pharmacological studies supporting its effectiveness in treating sore throat in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use is well-rooted in tradition, scientific validation remains limited at this time.
