Evidence supporting the use of: Fritillaria (unspecified)
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fritillaria, particularly species such as Fritillaria cirrhosa and Fritillaria thunbergii, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat respiratory ailments, including sore throat, cough, and phlegm. In TCM, "Bei Mu" (the bulb of Fritillaria) is believed to have properties that clear heat and moisten the lungs, thus alleviating symptoms of throat irritation and dryness. Historical texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and later medical compendia frequently mention Fritillaria preparations for these purposes. While some phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids in Fritillaria species with mild anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects, there is limited clinical research in the Western scientific literature specifically validating its efficacy for sore throat. Most modern evidence consists of in vitro or animal studies, or clinical trials combining Fritillaria with other herbs, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to Fritillaria. Therefore, the primary justification for its use in treating sore throat is traditional, rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence rating of 2 reflects the presence of limited pharmacological studies but a lack of high-quality clinical trials.
