Guaco (Mikania glomerata or Mikania laevigata) is a plant widely used in traditional South American herbal medicine, particularly in Brazil, to treat respiratory ailments such as sore throat, cough, and bronchitis. Its use for sore throat is primarily grounded in folk tradition, where infusions or syrups made from guaco leaves are consumed to soothe throat irritation and reduce inflammation. The plant contains coumarin and other phytochemicals believed to have anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory properties, which may explain its popularity in traditional remedies for throat and respiratory discomfort.

Scientific studies on guaco are limited, especially with respect to its direct effects on sore throat. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and smooth muscle relaxant activities, which could theoretically relieve symptoms associated with sore throat or upper respiratory tract irritation. However, well-controlled clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its efficacy for sore throat are lacking. As such, the evidence supporting its use is largely anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. The traditional use is recognized in Brazilian herbal pharmacopoeia, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for sore throat in clinical settings.
