Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sambucus nigra, commonly known as elderberry, has a long history of traditional use for treating respiratory ailments, including sore throat. In European folk medicine, elderberry infusions, syrups, and lozenges were commonly used to soothe sore throats and reduce associated inflammation. The flowers and berries are the parts most often utilized in these remedies. The rationale behind its traditional use largely stems from the plant's perceived ability to reduce swelling and its mild antiviral properties, as observed in other upper respiratory tract infections. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting Sambucus nigra for sore throat relief is limited. Some clinical studies indicate that elderberry may reduce the duration and severity of cold and influenza symptoms, conditions which often include sore throat as a symptom. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have found elderberry extract to be beneficial for influenza symptoms, but these trials rarely isolate sore throat outcomes. The proposed mechanisms involve elderberry’s flavonoids, which may block viral replication and modulate inflammatory pathways. Despite these findings, direct evidence for sore throat as a standalone symptom is sparse, and most recommendations for its use are based on tradition rather than robust clinical validation.
