Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spanish Oregano (Lippia graveolens), also known as Mexican oregano, has been traditionally used in folk medicine throughout Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America to alleviate symptoms of sore throat and other minor respiratory ailments. The primary justification for its use comes from ethnobotanical records and traditional practices, where infusions and teas made from its leaves are consumed to soothe throat irritation and mild coughs. The plant contains various essential oils, such as thymol and carvacrol, which are also found in Mediterranean oregano (Origanum vulgare) and are known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. However, while these properties suggest a plausible mechanism for easing throat discomfort, direct scientific evidence specifically investigating Spanish Oregano for sore throat treatment in humans is limited or lacking. Most available studies focus on its general antimicrobial and antioxidant activity but do not address clinical efficacy for sore throat. The evidence rating reflects that the use is primarily based on traditional knowledge with some indirect scientific rationale (due to its phytochemical profile), but without robust clinical trials or strong pharmacological data directly supporting efficacy for sore throat relief.
