Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Tonka Bean (Dipteryx odorata) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South America, where it has been used for various ailments, including sore throat. Traditional healers have utilized tonka bean in the form of infusions, powders, or tinctures, sometimes as part of herbal mixtures intended to soothe throat discomfort or coughs. The rationale for its use in sore throat remedies is largely anecdotal and based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, as well as its aromatic qualities, which might provide a mild numbing effect.

However, there is little to no scientific research validating these uses. Tonka bean contains coumarin, a compound known for its fragrance but also for its potential toxicity, especially to the liver when ingested in large amounts. Because of coumarin’s risks, tonka bean is banned as a food additive in several countries, including the United States. There is no robust clinical or pharmacological evidence to support the efficacy or safety of tonka bean in treating sore throat. Its use for this condition rests primarily on traditional practices rather than empirical validation, and safety concerns further limit its modern therapeutic application.
