Evidence supporting the use of: White Lily
For the health condition: Sore Throat
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
White Lily (Lilium candidum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Mediterranean folk practices. Traditionally, the petals and bulbs of White Lily have been used externally and internally for various ailments, including sore throats, coughs, and respiratory discomfort. Preparations such as infusions, syrups, or poultices made from the flowers or bulbs have been employed as soothing agents believed to reduce throat irritation and inflammation. The mucilaginous properties of some Lily preparations are thought to coat and calm irritated mucous membranes, which could provide symptomatic relief for sore throats.
However, there is very limited modern scientific research directly supporting the effectiveness of White Lily for sore throat. Studies on the pharmacological actions of Lilium candidum focus mainly on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in vitro or in animal models, but not specifically on sore throat or upper respiratory tract infections in humans. No clinical trials or robust scientific evaluations have validated its use for sore throat relief. Therefore, while the use of White Lily for sore throat is rooted in tradition, current evidence for its efficacy is weak, and it should not be considered a proven remedy based on scientific standards.
