Agnuside is an iridoid glycoside found in the fruit of Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chaste tree. Traditionally, extracts of Vitex agnus-castus have been used in European herbal medicine for centuries to support women’s hormonal health, particularly for issues related to the menstrual cycle such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), irregular periods, and other menstrual complaints. The traditional use is based on the belief that compounds like agnuside can influence hormones such as prolactin, thereby supporting hormonal balance.
Although there is moderate evidence for the efficacy of Vitex agnus-castus extracts in alleviating symptoms of PMS and certain menstrual disorders, most research has evaluated the whole extract rather than isolated agnuside. Agnuside is considered a marker compound for quality control in commercial herbal preparations, but direct studies on agnuside’s effect on hormone levels or the “Specific Hormones” body system are lacking. Thus, the use of agnuside for supporting hormonal health is mainly justified by historical and traditional practices instead of robust scientific validation of agnuside itself.
In summary, the use of agnuside to support the hormone system is primarily based on the traditional use of its plant source, Vitex agnus-castus, rather than on targeted, modern clinical studies of agnuside as an isolated bioactive compound.
