Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-carnitine that is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and has been researched for its effects on brain health and neurotransmitter function. Scientific studies suggest that ALCAR may influence the levels and activity of several neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, dopamine, and serotonin. This is primarily due to its role in cellular energy metabolism and its potential neuroprotective properties.

Research has shown that ALCAR may increase acetylcholine synthesis by providing acetyl groups for acetylcholine production, which is important for memory and learning. Clinical trials have explored its use in cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, depression, and neuropathic pain. Some evidence supports its efficacy in improving symptoms of depression and cognitive deficits, likely through modulation of neurotransmitter systems and mitochondrial function.
