Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Panax ginseng has been used traditionally in East Asian medicine for centuries, often as a general tonic to enhance vitality and cognitive function. Modern scientific research has investigated its effects on the central nervous system, specifically on neurotransmitter modulation. Several animal and human studies suggest that ginsenosides, the main active compounds in ginseng, can influence levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and acetylcholine. These effects are thought to underlie observed benefits in mood, cognitive function, and fatigue resistance. For example, some clinical trials have shown that Panax ginseng supplementation may improve aspects of mental performance and mood, possibly due to its impact on monoaminergic systems. However, results are mixed and the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some studies reporting only modest or no effect. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while there is some scientific support for Panax ginseng’s ability to modulate neurotransmitter systems, more rigorous and larger-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and clarify their clinical relevance. Thus, the evidence for using Panax ginseng specifically to support neurotransmitter-related body systems is real, but not yet robust.
