Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hesperidin methylchalcone is a modified form of hesperidin, a flavonoid compound found in citrus fruits. It is commonly used in combination with other flavonoids, such as diosmin, in oral supplements marketed for vascular health, including the management of spider veins (telangiectasias) and chronic venous insufficiency. The rationale behind its use is based on its purported properties to strengthen capillaries, reduce capillary permeability, and exert anti-inflammatory effects on the vascular endothelium.

There is some scientific evidence supporting the use of hesperidin methylchalcone (often in combination with diosmin) for improving symptoms associated with chronic venous disorders, such as leg swelling, heaviness, and cramps. Several clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that these compounds may help improve microcirculation and reduce edema. However, the evidence specifically targeting spider veins is limited and of low quality. Most studies focus on larger venous insufficiency issues rather than the cosmetic or minor vascular changes seen in spider veins.

The mechanism of action is thought to involve strengthening of blood vessel walls and reducing inflammation. While hesperidin methylchalcone is widely used in Europe for venous disorders, high-quality, placebo-controlled studies specifically addressing its efficacy for spider veins are lacking. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and modest evidence for its use in broader venous health, direct support for spider vein treatment is limited.
