Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), particularly BMP-2, are scientifically validated agents used to support spinal fusion in the context of spine surgery. BMPs are a group of growth factors that play a critical role in bone formation and repair. Their use is not rooted in tradition, but rather in biotechnology and orthopedic research. In spinal surgery, BMPs are often used as an alternative to autologous bone grafts (bone harvested from the patient's own body) to stimulate bone growth and facilitate spinal fusion, especially in cases of degenerative disk disease or other conditions requiring stabilization of the spine.

The most common clinical application is in anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and other fusion techniques, where BMP can be delivered via a collagen sponge placed at the fusion site. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that BMP-2 is effective in promoting bone growth and achieving fusion rates comparable to or greater than traditional bone grafts, with the added benefit of avoiding donor site morbidity. However, its use is associated with some risks, such as increased inflammation, ectopic bone formation, and rarely, other complications. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA have approved BMP-2 for specific spinal procedures, although off-label use exists.

In summary, the use of BMPs to support the spinal disks—more accurately, to facilitate spinal fusion by promoting bone healing in the vertebral column—has a solid scientific foundation and is an established clinical practice in spine surgery.
