Baikal Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Huang Qin." In TCM theory, Baikal Skullcap is considered to clear heat and dry dampness, and is frequently used to address conditions thought to affect the Spleen, such as digestive disturbances, diarrhea, and inflammation. The concept of the Spleen in TCM differs from the anatomical spleen in Western medicine; in TCM, the Spleen is associated with digestion, the transformation of food into energy (Qi), and the transportation of fluids. Herbal formulas containing Baikal Skullcap are traditionally prescribed to "strengthen" or "support" Spleen function, especially in cases of damp-heat accumulation.
From a scientific perspective, Baikal Skullcap contains flavonoids such as baicalin and wogonin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in laboratory and animal studies. However, direct scientific evidence linking Baikal Skullcap to support of the Spleen, specifically as defined by Western medicine (i.e., the organ involved in immune function and blood filtration), is lacking. Most scientific research has focused on its effects on inflammation, liver health, and certain infections, rather than digestive health or Spleen function as described in TCM. Therefore, while its use for the Spleen is well-established in traditional practice, robust scientific validation for this specific application is limited.
