Calycosin is a major isoflavonoid found in Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi), a staple herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Astragalus is classically used to "tonify the spleen and qi," which is believed to support digestive health, immune function, and general vitality. The concept of the "Spleen" in TCM does not exactly correspond to the anatomical spleen in Western medicine, but rather to a functional system related to digestion and nutrient assimilation. Calycosin itself has been studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties in vitro and in animal models. However, direct scientific studies specifically linking calycosin to spleen support, especially as defined by TCM, are lacking. The justification for its use to support the spleen body system is therefore grounded primarily in traditional use of Astragalus, with some modern research into calycosin’s bioactivity that may be relevant to immune and digestive health.
