Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the body system: Spleen
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine and other holistic systems to support the "Spleen" body system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Spleen is considered a central organ responsible for digestion, transformation and transportation of nutrients, and overall energy (Qi) production. According to TCM theory, ginger is categorized as a "warm" herb that invigorates the Spleen, dispels cold, and aids in resolving dampness, which collectively support digestive health and energy. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and subsequent TCM materia medica reference the use of ginger to treat symptoms associated with Spleen deficiency, such as poor appetite, bloating, and fatigue.
While there is scientific evidence for ginger's benefits on gastrointestinal health—such as its antiemetic and prokinetic effects—the specific concept of "Spleen" in TCM does not directly map onto Western biomedical understanding. Thus, the justification for using ginger to "support the Spleen" is rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation for this particular body system. However, the traditional use is longstanding and well-documented within TCM literature.
