Houttuynia cordata, commonly known as "fish mint" or "chameleon plant," is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Houttuynia is believed to have heat-clearing, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is sometimes included in formulations intended to support the "Spleen" system, which in TCM theory is associated with digestive function, energy production, and the transformation and transportation of nutrients. Houttuynia is thought to help remove "dampness" and clear "heat-toxins," which are considered to impede the normal functioning of the Spleen. However, the concept of the "Spleen" in TCM does not correspond directly to the anatomical spleen recognized in Western medicine; rather, it refers to a broader set of digestive and metabolic processes. There is very limited scientific research that specifically investigates the effects of Houttuynia cordata on the spleen or digestive function as understood in the biomedical sense. Most modern research on Houttuynia focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and potential antiviral properties. Thus, while there is a strong tradition of using Houttuynia in TCM to support the Spleen system, scientific validation for this specific use is lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or rooted in traditional practice rather than clinical trials or biomedical research.
