Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as reishi mushroom, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is believed to support the Spleen system. In TCM, the Spleen is considered central to digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall vitality. Lingzhi is classified as a tonic herb and is thought to "strengthen the Spleen," thereby improving energy, appetite, and resilience to fatigue and illness.
Historically, classical texts such as the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing and later materia medica describe lingzhi as beneficial for "Qi" (vital energy) and as a remedy that harmonizes and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach. This traditional use persists today in TCM formulas intended to support digestive health and energy by targeting the Spleen.
While there is some emerging modern research on lingzhi’s effects on immune modulation, antioxidant activity, and general well-being, direct scientific validation of its impact on the Spleen as conceptualized in TCM is lacking. Most available studies do not specifically address the TCM Spleen system or its associated digestive and metabolic functions. The evidence supporting lingzhi’s use for the Spleen is therefore primarily traditional, with a moderate historical consensus but limited direct scientific support for this specific indication.
