Mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata), especially its dried peel known as "chen pi" or "ju pi," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the Spleen body system. In TCM theory, the Spleen is responsible for the transformation and transportation of nutrients and fluids. Mandarin peel is traditionally believed to "regulate qi," "dry dampness," and "strengthen the Spleen," thereby addressing symptoms such as bloating, poor appetite, and mild digestive discomfort. The use is documented in classic TCM texts like the "Compendium of Materia Medica" and persists in modern herbal formulas.

However, scientific research validating these specific Spleen-supporting effects is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that flavonoids and essential oils found in mandarin peel may have mild digestive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. But direct clinical evidence supporting its impact on the human Spleen (as understood in TCM) or on digestive health remains weak and largely extrapolated from broader studies on citrus fruits. Thus, while the traditional use is well established, scientific validation is minimal, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
