Polysaccharides, particularly those derived from medicinal mushrooms (such as Ganoderma lucidum, also known as Reishi, and Astragalus membranaceus), have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the Spleen system. In TCM, the Spleen is viewed as a central organ responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and energy production. Polysaccharide-rich herbs are believed to "tonify" or strengthen the Spleen, promoting overall vitality and immune function. Historical records, including classical TCM texts, cite the use of these herbs for symptoms such as fatigue, poor appetite, and digestive weakness—conditions associated with Spleen deficiency.

While there is emerging scientific research suggesting that certain polysaccharides can modulate the immune system and may have prebiotic effects on the gut, direct evidence specifically supporting their action on the anatomical spleen in humans or their ability to "support the Spleen system" as defined in TCM is limited. Most available research is preclinical or conducted in animal models. Therefore, the justification for using polysaccharides to support the Spleen is primarily traditional, with some supportive but not conclusive scientific studies.
