Taraxasterol is a pentacyclic triterpene compound found primarily in dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Its use to support the spleen is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where dandelion has been used to "clear heat," "reduce toxicity," and "support spleen and stomach function." Within this context, the "spleen" refers more to a functional system related to digestion and energy transformation rather than the anatomical spleen recognized in Western medicine.

There are a few laboratory studies indicating anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of taraxasterol, but these are mostly preclinical and do not specifically address spleen function. No high-quality human clinical trials substantiate its efficacy for spleen health, and the available scientific evidence directly linking taraxasterol to spleen support is lacking. Most of the rationale for its use in this context comes from its historical application in herbal formulas. Therefore, while taraxasterol-containing plants have a long tradition in herbal medicine systems for supporting "spleen" function as defined by TCM, this use is not supported by robust scientific validation.
