Vine tea, known scientifically as Ampelopsis grossedentata and also referred to as "Teng Cha" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a history of use primarily in Chinese herbal practice. In TCM, the "Spleen" body system refers not strictly to the anatomical spleen but to a broader functional concept involving digestion, nutrient absorption, and energy (Qi) production. Vine tea is traditionally used to "clear heat," "remove dampness," and support digestive health, which TCM practitioners associate with supporting the Spleen system.

The traditional rationale comes from the belief that vine tea helps to restore balance in cases of Spleen deficiency, which may manifest as fatigue, poor appetite, or digestive disturbances. The main bioactive compound in vine tea is dihydromyricetin, which has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects in animal and cell studies. However, these effects have not been directly linked to Spleen health as defined by modern biomedical science.

To date, there are no robust clinical trials or scientific studies directly connecting vine tea to improved Spleen function, either in the biomedical sense or in terms of TCM outcomes. Its use is therefore justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the evidence for its efficacy in supporting the Spleen system is limited.
