Rating (out of 5): 2

Geraniol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid and alcohol found in essential oils such as rose oil, citronella oil, and palmarosa oil. Its use against Staphylococcus infections is primarily supported by preliminary scientific evidence from in vitro (lab-based) and some in vivo (animal) studies. These studies demonstrate that geraniol exhibits antimicrobial activity against various strains of Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The proposed mechanisms include disruption of bacterial cell membranes, inhibition of biofilm formation, and interference with bacterial communication pathways (quorum sensing). However, despite these promising laboratory findings, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence in humans to support the use of geraniol as a treatment for staph infections. No large-scale clinical trials or systematic reviews have been published that confirm its effectiveness or safety in human subjects for this indication. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation at the preclinical level, the overall strength of evidence is low, and geraniol should not be considered a substitute for established antibacterial therapies. Further research, especially well-designed clinical trials, is needed before geraniol can be recommended for routine use against staph infections.
