Rating (out of 5): 2

Mangostin, particularly α-mangostin, is a xanthone compound derived from the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana). Its use for Staphylococcus infections is primarily based on in vitro scientific research. Several laboratory studies have demonstrated that mangostin exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). The proposed mechanism is disruption of bacterial cell membranes and inhibition of biofilm formation, which are important factors in the pathogenicity and persistence of S. aureus infections (Sakagami et al., 2005; Negi et al., 2018). However, all evidence to date is limited to preclinical studies (test tube or animal models). There are no published clinical trials or human studies evaluating the safety or efficacy of mangostin for treating staph infections. Therefore, while laboratory findings justify further exploration, they do not support the use of mangostin as a clinical treatment at present. Its use is not based on traditional medicine for this specific indication, but rather on recent scientific interest in its antimicrobial properties.
