Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its use for treating infections, including those caused by Staphylococcus species, is rooted in its historical reputation as a "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" herb. Traditional practitioners have employed it for abscesses, sores, and various skin infections, which today may include those involving Staphylococcus aureus. The evidence supporting its use is mostly based on this longstanding empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts of Oldenlandia diffusa possess antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria, but these results do not conclusively translate to clinical efficacy in humans. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials or systematic reviews confirming its effectiveness in treating staph infections. Most modern references to its use for staph are extrapolated from its broad inclusion in formulas for "infectious" or "toxic" conditions in traditional practice. Therefore, while Oldenlandia is traditionally used for infections that may include staph, the scientific evidence supporting this use remains limited.
