Acid protease is an enzyme that functions optimally at low (acidic) pH, such as that found in the human stomach. Its primary biological role is to help break down dietary proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids, a process essential to human digestion. The stomach naturally secretes the acid protease pepsin, which is produced by chief cells as pepsinogen and activated by gastric acid. Supplementing with acid proteases (from microbial, fungal, or animal sources) is scientifically validated for individuals with reduced stomach acid or digestive enzyme insufficiency, such as those with hypochlorhydria or atrophic gastritis. Clinical studies and reviews (e.g., PMID: 10905684, 19783521) support the efficacy of exogenous proteases, including acid-tolerant varieties, to improve protein digestion and nutrient absorption in such populations. Additionally, acid proteases are used in over-the-counter digestive enzyme supplements and are recognized as safe for these purposes by regulatory agencies.
