Baicalin is a flavonoid compound found in the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis, commonly known as Chinese skullcap. Its use to support the stomach and digestive health can be traced back to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where the herb is often included in formulations for gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, dysentery, and stomach upset. Baicalin-containing preparations are believed in TCM to clear heat and dampness, which are traditional concepts associated with digestive discomfort and inflammation.
From a scientific perspective, some preliminary laboratory and animal studies suggest baicalin may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and gastroprotective effects, such as reducing gastric lesions and modulating inflammatory cytokines in models of gastric injury. However, clinical studies in humans are limited, and there is not yet robust evidence to firmly establish its efficacy for stomach health. The traditional use of baicalin for stomach-related issues is well-documented, but current scientific validation for these stomach-specific applications remains insufficient.
