Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita, also known as Shan Yao) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to support the Stomach and Spleen systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese Yam is considered to tonify the Qi and nourish Yin, particularly in the digestive tract. It is commonly included in formulas to address symptoms such as fatigue, poor appetite, diarrhea, and loose stools, which are attributed to Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency. Historical texts and modern TCM practitioners consistently reference its use for these indications.

Scientific studies on Chinese Yam are limited and mostly preclinical. Some in vitro and animal research suggests potential benefits for gastrointestinal health, such as improving mucosal integrity and modulating gut microbiota, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is well-established, scientific evidence is not yet strong enough to fully validate its efficacy for supporting the Stomach system by Western standards.
