Lactoferrin is a multifunctional glycoprotein found in milk and other secretions. Its primary relevance to the stomach body system comes from its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been studied in the context of gastrointestinal health. Scientific studies have shown that lactoferrin can inhibit the growth of various pathogenic bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium implicated in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Some clinical trials have demonstrated that supplementation with lactoferrin, often in combination with antibiotics, may improve eradication rates of H. pylori and reduce gastrointestinal inflammation. For example, a study published in Helicobacter (2003) found that bovine lactoferrin supplementation enhanced the efficacy of standard triple therapy for H. pylori infection. Additionally, lactoferrin's ability to bind iron may limit bacterial growth in the stomach, contributing to improved microbial balance.
However, the overall body of evidence remains limited, with most studies being small or of moderate quality. There is insufficient high-quality evidence to support lactoferrin as a standalone therapy for stomach health, but there is preliminary scientific support for its adjunctive use in specific gastrointestinal infections and inflammatory conditions.
