Evidence supporting the use of: Mango
For the body system: Stomach
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mango (Mangifera indica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in South Asia, for supporting digestive health and the stomach. In Ayurveda and other folk traditions, mango fruit and its various parts (such as leaves and bark) have been employed to soothe the stomach, relieve indigestion, and address conditions like constipation and acidity. The fruit is considered cooling and is sometimes recommended for balance in cases of excess heat or irritation in the digestive tract. The fibrous nature of mango, along with its water content, is also believed to aid bowel regularity and digestive comfort according to these traditional practices.
From a scientific perspective, mango contains dietary fiber, polyphenols, and enzymes (notably amylase), which can contribute to digestive processes and gut health. However, most studies focus on general digestive benefits such as supporting regularity or having prebiotic effects, rather than direct clinical support for "stomach" health or specific stomach disorders. There is some preliminary evidence that mango polyphenols might help maintain the gut microbiota and reduce inflammation, which could indirectly benefit the stomach, but robust clinical trials in this area are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use of mango for supporting the stomach is well-documented, scientific validation is still limited and emerging.
