Plantago, commonly known as plantain (not to be confused with the banana-like fruit), includes species such as Plantago major and Plantago lanceolata. Traditionally, Plantago leaves and seeds have been used in various cultures to support digestive health, including soothing the stomach and alleviating minor gastrointestinal discomfort. Folk medicine practices in Europe, Asia, and the Americas have utilized Plantago preparations internally as teas or decoctions for their purported demulcent (soothing) and anti-inflammatory effects on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract.
The mucilaginous components of Plantago, particularly from the seeds (psyllium), can absorb water and form a gel-like substance believed to coat and soothe the lining of the stomach and intestines. However, most of the scientific research on Plantago focuses on its use as a bulk-forming laxative (especially Plantago ovata, or psyllium husk) rather than direct benefits to the stomach itself. There is limited scientific validation for its specific use in supporting stomach health, ulcer healing, or gastritis relief. Therefore, while there is a strong tradition of its use for general stomach support, the evidence base is modest, and Plantago's primary scientifically recognized role relates more to bowel health than to direct stomach support.
