Rennet has a long history of traditional use, primarily in the context of cheesemaking, where it is essential for coagulating milk. Its association with digestive health and the stomach body system arises from folk medicine traditions, particularly in European cultures, where animal rennet (usually from the stomach lining of calves) was sometimes used to aid digestion. The rationale was that, because rennet contains the enzyme chymosin (rennin), which curdles milk in the young animal's stomach, it could similarly help humans digest dairy or alleviate digestive discomfort. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While chymosin does break down milk protein, there is little clinical evidence to support the use of rennet as a digestive aid in humans or its benefit to overall stomach health. Modern digestive enzyme supplements may include other proteases, but rennet itself is not typically recommended or studied for this purpose in medical literature. Therefore, while there is some traditional basis for using rennet in support of the stomach, the evidence is largely anecdotal and not substantiated by rigorous scientific studies.
