Zinc-L-carnosine is used to support the stomach, primarily for its potential benefits in maintaining and repairing the gastric mucosa. Several clinical and preclinical studies have investigated its effects, particularly in relation to gastric ulcers, mucosal healing, and protection against gastric injury caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Helicobacter pylori infection. Zinc-L-carnosine is a chelated compound that combines zinc, which plays a role in tissue repair, with L-carnosine, a dipeptide with antioxidant properties. Research has shown that this compound can adhere to ulcerated areas in the stomach, providing localized protection and promoting healing. A number of randomized controlled trials in humans suggest that zinc-L-carnosine supplementation can accelerate the healing of gastric ulcers, reduce dyspeptic symptoms, and improve gastric mucosal integrity. A meta-analysis published in 2017 in Clinical Nutrition concluded that zinc-L-carnosine is effective in the treatment of gastric ulcers and in the prevention of NSAID-induced gastric injury. However, while the evidence base is promising, it is not yet as large or robust as that for certain other interventions, and most studies are relatively small. Thus, the scientific justification for its use is reasonable, but not unequivocal. There is limited traditional use of zinc-L-carnosine as such, since it is a synthesized compound, although zinc and carnosine individually have longer histories of medical interest.
