Oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis, also known as Thuja orientalis) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medicinal systems. Its seeds, known as Bai Zi Ren, have been used primarily for their purported effects on insomnia, palpitations, and as a gentle sedative. In some traditional contexts, the leaves and other parts of the plant have been used for respiratory tract infections or inflammatory conditions, which may be broadly interpreted to include illnesses like sore throat. However, there is no specific historical or traditional documentation that arborvitae is used explicitly to treat or support recovery from Strep Throat (which is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes). The rationale for its use would be based on its general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties described in folk medicine, rather than evidence of direct activity against strep bacteria or clinical trials in strep throat patients. Modern scientific research on P. orientalis has identified some antimicrobial compounds, but there are no studies that directly examine its effects on strep throat or Streptococcus pyogenes infection. As such, while there is a traditional basis for its use in respiratory or throat conditions, the specific application for strep throat is not strongly supported by either robust traditional or scientific evidence.
