Evidence supporting the use of: Banyan
For the health condition: Stress
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
The use of Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) to support or treat stress is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly within Ayurvedic practices in India. In Ayurveda, various parts of the Banyan tree—such as the bark, leaves, aerial roots, and latex—have been employed for a range of ailments, including as tonics for general health and as adaptogens purported to help the body cope with physical and emotional stress. However, the direct use of Banyan for stress relief is more anecdotal and based on traditional beliefs rather than robust clinical investigation.
Scientific evidence supporting Banyan’s efficacy for stress relief is minimal. Some preliminary in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Banyan may have antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically contribute to stress reduction. Nonetheless, these effects have not been directly correlated with clinically meaningful reduction of psychological stress in humans. There is a lack of well-designed human trials specifically assessing Banyan’s impact on stress markers or symptoms. As such, its use for stress is largely justified by tradition, with scientific validation limited and indirect.
