Frankincense, an aromatic resin derived from trees of the genus Boswellia, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It is often used in the form of incense, essential oil, or as part of herbal remedies for its reputed calming and centering properties. The use of frankincense for stress relief is primarily rooted in its traditional role in religious rituals and meditation practices, where it is believed to promote a sense of tranquility and spiritual well-being. Aromatherapy practitioners also frequently use frankincense essential oil to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, although these practices are largely based on historical usage and anecdotal evidence.
Scientific studies investigating frankincense's direct effects on psychological stress are limited and of variable quality. Some animal research suggests that certain compounds in frankincense (such as incensole acetate) may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, potentially by modulating brain pathways related to stress response. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence is not strong enough to conclusively support its use for stress management in evidence-based medicine. Therefore, while tradition strongly supports the use of frankincense for stress, scientific validation remains preliminary and inconclusive.
