Kava root (Piper methysticum) has a long history of traditional use in the South Pacific, where it has been consumed as a beverage for its calming and anxiolytic effects. In recent decades, kava has gained popularity in Western countries as a natural remedy for stress and anxiety. Scientific studies have investigated kava’s efficacy, particularly focusing on kavalactones—its primary active compounds—which are believed to modulate gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity in the brain, leading to sedative and anxiolytic effects.
Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials and systematic reviews have found that kava extracts can significantly reduce symptoms of mild to moderate anxiety and stress compared to placebo. Notably, a 2011 Cochrane review concluded that kava extract was more effective than placebo in reducing anxiety, though it called for more rigorous studies due to variations in extract preparations and dosages. The evidence for stress reduction is somewhat extrapolated from these anxiolytic effects, as stress and anxiety often overlap in clinical presentation.
However, concerns about rare but serious liver toxicity have tempered enthusiasm for kava, leading to regulatory restrictions in some countries. Overall, while the evidence base is moderate and suggests kava may help reduce stress, users should be cautious and consult healthcare providers before use, especially if they have liver conditions or are taking other medications.
